Why BIS?
Patient with new BIS Quatro Sensor

The Challenge

Each patient is unique and requires a customized amount of anesthetic and sedative medication to ensure that they are unconscious and free of pain, yet able to wake-up quickly and experience minimal side-effects from anesthesia and sedation.

The Solution

Bispectral Index technology directly measures the effects of anesthetics and sedatives on the brain, enabling clinicians to customize the type and amount of medication they administer to meet their patient's individual needs.

Using a sensor placed on the patient's forehead, BIS monitoring translates information from the electroencephalogram (EEG) into a single number that represents each patient’s level of consciousness. This number – the BIS value – ranges from 100 (indicating an awake patient) to zero (indicating the absence of brain activity). Using the BIS value to guide administration of anesthetic and sedative medication, clinicians can make informed decisions for optimal anesthesia and sedation.

Key Benefits

  • Clinicians are provided with new information to help determine the most effective anesthetic and sedative mix
  • BIS is effective for use in a variety of patient populations and in diverse clinical settings
  • Patients have faster, more predictable wake-ups
  • Patients experience higher-quality recoveries with less grogginess, nausea and vomiting
  • By monitoring response to anesthetics and sedatives, patients are objectively assessed for the potential to regain consciousness – or become "aware" during their procedure
  • Hospitals have the potential to reduce costs through improved operational efficiency and effective administration of anesthetics and/or sedatives
