Boston Scientific in Strategic Alliance with Aspect
In August, Aspect and Boston Scientific Corporation, a global developer, manufacturer, and marketer of medical devices, announced the formation of a strategic alliance to develop and bring to market new sedation management technologies for use in connection with minimally-invasive medical procedures. The goal is to improve the safety, efficiency and efficacy of sedation in clinical settings such as endoscopy suites and interventional cardiology and radiology suites using Aspect’s brain monitoring technology.
Aspect will focus on product development and clinical validation of the new brain monitoring tools. Boston Scientific will provide marketing expertise and distribution channels for the new products. An estimated 30 million procedures performed annually in the United States could benefit from newly developed sedation management tools.
For Aspect, which has more than a decade of experience in the development of clinically-proven brain monitoring technologies for the operating room and ICU environments, the alliance with Boston Scientific is a logical extension of its pioneering work in sedation and anesthesia management.
“Increasingly, the less-invasive medical procedures market offers opportunity to improve the patient experience and quality of care when it comes to precision sedation management,” said Aspect president and CEO Nassib Chamoun of the alliance with Boston Scientific. “Aspect’s highest priority is to improve patient care, and this market gives us an enormous opportunity to do just that.”
In connection with the new alliance, Boston Scientific also made a $10 million equity investment in Aspect by purchasing 1.4 million shares of Aspect stock at a substantial premium to its then-current market price. In exchange, Boston Scientific acquired the option rights for worldwide distribution of the new technologies developed for the minimally-invasive medical procedures market.
